I suppose it all depends on the reason for calibrating your display. The calibrating tool you will find in system preferences > displays > color is actually very good... the expert mode allows for many adjustments.
Here is a link for calibrating displays so 'what you see is what the printer sees' which is really what most photo types are interested in as far as digital images and printing. Here's the LINK
There other calibrating tools, for instance, 'digital slide' shows on different displays, monitors, etc...
It's all about calibrating your display to mimic where your images will be viewed or printed
