If you have some files on your Mac that you want to archive, you can compress them using the Gzip compression format. Compressing files enables you to send them more quickly as email attachments, or you can free up space on your Mac's hard drive. Macs do not have a native utility for compressing files using the Gzip format, so you'll need to use a third-party Gzip utility.

CleanArchiver

1.Gzip Tool For Mac

Browse to the Sopht Square website at Sopht.jp/cleanarchiver. Download the CleanArchiver utility and install it on your Mac.

Click 'Applications' on your dock and then click 'CleanArchiver' to launch the application. The CleanArchiver window appears.

Click the 'Archive Type' pull-down menu and select 'gzip.'

4.

Drag the file that you want to gzip into the CleanArchiver window. CleanArchiver archives the file.

Mac

Gui Tar 1.2.4

1.

Browse to the Edenwaith website at Edenwaith.com/products/guitar. Download the Gui Tar 1.2.4 utility and install it on your Mac.

Click 'Applications' on your dock and click 'Gui Tar' to launch the application. The Gui Tar window appears.

Click the 'Compression Type' pull-down menu and select 'gz.'

Drag a file that you want to gzip from a folder on your Mac into the 'Gui Tar' window. Click the 'Compress' button to gzip the file.

TarPit

Browse to the Entropy4 website. Download the TarPit utility and install it on your Mac.

Click 'Applications' on your dock and then click 'TarPit' to launch the application. The TarPit window appears.

Click the 'Compression' pull-down menu and select 'GZip.'

Drag the file that you want to archive from a folder on your Mac into the left pane of the TarPit window. TarPit automatically gzips the file.
