Your computer manufacturer may have included a trial version of McAfee security products on your computer or laptop or your installation may have become damaged. Before reinstalling McAfee or installing another product, it's important to uninstall your current version of McAfee completely to avoid conflicts. This is not possible without using a special uninstall utility from McAfee or a third party.
Overview
McAfee Security Center cannot be removed completely from your computer using the Windows uninstall utility. Although some McAfee products can be uninstalled in this way, the security center remains; trying to stop the service manually results in an 'Access Denied' error.
Windows Uninstall
Use Windows Programs and Features to uninstall McAfee products on your system first. In Windows 8 choose 'Settings' from the Charms menu, type 'uninstall' (omitting quotes) into the search box and select 'Uninstall a program' from the options listed. Search for all McAfee products and uninstall them.
McAfee Uninstall Tool
Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, also known as the MCPR, from the McAfee website (see References). Double-click Mcpr.exe to run it and follow the onscreen prompts to start the cleanup process. At the 'Removal Complete' screen, restart your computer to complete the removal of McAfee products. If the MCPR fails to fully remove your McAfee products, click 'View Logs' and save the log file for McAfee Technical Support.
Security
Don't leave your computer unsecured. Install a minimum security configuration of a firewall and anti-virus and anti-malware software from a single manufacturer. Only install one anti-virus program at a time, fully uninstall it before trying another, and don't try to mix products from different software suites.
